As Gramps cleaned the pool, actually not cleaning but brushing the alge off the sides and bottom, he would add clorine... way too much. All the little blonde headed kids would wind up with greenish hair. He did not have any type of filtering system, he just had a valve below the deep end that was somewhere near the bottom of the hill, and at the end of summer he would open the valve and drain the pool. It would run out and pretty much flood the dirt road below. Since there are now homes at the bottom of the hill I noticed the pool has been removed.. I do believe they had the first swimming pool in Quartz Hill.
By the time summer was over the pool was dark green and you couldn't see the bottom, and there was a plethora of
waterbugs. The pool was about 30ft in length and it went from 3 feet to 8 feet. In between the deep and shallow end there was quite the drop. One year as I
was helping to clean the pool, I was about 9 at the time, I was at the bottom with the hose scrubbing and washing the algae. I decided to go home for lunch. I grabbed the hose
to use it to pull my self up to the shallow end to get out. My feet slipped on the algae and my head hit the bottom. Since I had both hands on the hose I didn't break my fall...
just my head. As I ran home I could look up and see the bump. Mom freaked when she saw me, why I don't know since she was always taking me to the ER for some injury.
